I bought this jacket online two months ago and had it sent to my house so that my sister could bring it down to where I’m currently living when she came to visit. First of all, I ordered this jacket on a Tuesday morning and it showed up Thursday morning even though I had just gotten free 3-5 day shipping. I had read reviews that Outland does a great job with fast shipping but I hadn’t expected it to actual get to my house so early. That kind of treatment in itself is enough of a reason to order from Outland again.

Like the reviews I had read about Outland, Arcteryx reviews read nothing but praise.

I was a little unsure about what size to get since with their measurement guide I could go either small or medium. I’m 5’6″ and 135lbs and I enjoy climbing and trekking so I have a pretty athletic and proportional build. I had read a few reviews suggesting to size up unless you actually were planning on wearing a t-shirt underneath every time but I was still unsure. I have a Montane jacket and it’s a little awkwardly baggy sometimes since I decided to size up. Fortunately, with only one jacket left in stock which just so happened to be a medium, I was spared from actually having to decide for myself, and now that I actually have the jacket, there is no way I would get a small. When they say athletic fit, they mean athletic fit. I can layer an alpaca sweater underneath comfortably but the jacket bulks up a little and looks a little awkward. When it’s been chilly I’ve usually just worn the jacket with a t-shirt and a flannel and that’s worked out well since it traps enough body heat to keep me warm and it’s not bulky.

My biggest complaint is one I think I can fix. Although it is Gore-tex and thus waterproof it sometimes doesn’t feel/look waterproof. When I say it doesn’t feel waterproof I mean that when I’m wearing a t-shirt and the water has begun to be absorbed by the fabric, the fabric sags a little and is cold against my skin. Since I’ve only had this jacket for a month I don’t know why water is already being absorbed. I plan on just following the Gore-tex instructions (cleaning/applying heat) and then retreating with a spray DWR. Since I’m not actually getting wet it’s not really an issue but I was a little miffed that my brand new jacket didn’t shed water as visibly reassuringly as my significantly cheaper other rain jacket.

Aside from that mostly aesthetic problem, this jacket has effectively and efficiently kept me dry; from daily jungle showers to afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains and just every day city rain. The sleeves are wonderfully designed and possibly my favorite part. They are long and taper so naturally and the velcro on the wrist is tiny but strong so the fit is incredible and the jacket comfortably moves with me while still keeping me dry. The fact that the velcro is small also makes me more comfortable with wearing a sweater under it since I’m not worried about the velcro catching the wool. The hood is large and easily adjusted although I must say I was thoroughly confused the first time I tried to adjust it. The cords are ingeniously minimal and pretty simple and easy to use I just hadn’t looked at them before I put the jacket on. The fabric on the inside almost feels soft which I find incredible since it’s not lined and it’s just the inner part of the shell. The jacket is long enough in the back to cover my butt even when I’m moving around. It’s incredibly light and packs down small which is great for weekend trips for field work as well as backpacking trips. It doesn’t pack into itself but I don’t mind since I’m almost always using it whenever I pack it. It works well for wind protection, sun protection and rain protection. When I’ve been in the jungle with it, it’s light and cool enough that I don’t overheat but it still keeps me dry.

Basically, when I wear this jacket I feel pretty invincible. It’s great protection and it fits. You put it on and it just fits. Arcteryx thought of everything. It feels good AND it looks good. I’ve read this same kind of comment about other Arcteryx products and there’s no way to explain it other than engineering excellence and quality material.

I did get this at the end of the season so it was on super sale but this is the kind of product that I would seriously consider paying full price for. This is my first Arc’teryx product and it truly does seem worth every penny. It’s a great all around jacket and I expect many many more years with it.

This jacket is very light weight, fits great, looks great, keeps me dry.. I’m not sure it would keep me warm, but it’s perfect for keeping dry when it’s not too cold out.
