Charges Both iPhone and iPad, Separate Cable and Adaptor is a Plus; Cable/Plug Durability Poor, January 18, 2013
This review is from: Belkin Car Charger with Lightning Cable for Apple iPhone 5 / 5S / 5c, iPad 4th Gen, iPad mini, iPod touch 5th Gen, and iPod nano 7th Gen (2.1 AMP / 10 Watt) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I purchased this from the local Apple store after checking Amazon and finding that the prices were identical. At some point I assume the Amazon price will come down since this seems expensive for such a simple device, but high prices seem to be typical for these iPhone accessories, particularly when the products are new. (NOTE: as I update this review on 11/7/13, I see that this is now selling for considerably cheaper here on Amazon).

    Advantages:

    – the charger and cable are separate, which is a big plus in my opinion. This means that:
—- you can use the charger for any other device that uses a USB cable
—- you now have another USB to lightning cable, if needed to connect your device to a computer for example
    – sufficient power output (2.1 amp) for both iPhone and iPad (the iPad and certain other products require a higher power output than the iPhone, some products can’t handle both)
    – green LED illuminates when plugged into car to show that power is being supplied
    – quality of the charger and cable is very good – solidly made, looks good
    – the lightning plug fits into the phone or iPad and clears the case easily (I have a Speck case on my iPhone 5). The lightning plug is slightly larger than the Apple manufactured plug on cables provided by Apple, as the other reviewer has noted, but not so much that it should result in any interference issues.

    Disadvantages:

    – somewhat expensive (Note that this disadvantage is no longer applicable as of 11/7/13, prices having come down very substantially since I originally wrote this review).
    – seems to be available in black only, so if you want to have the same white as other accessories, I don’t think that is available (yet)
    – the green LED is much brighter than necessary

The only reason I give this 4 rather than 5 stars is the price. In every other aspect this does the job perfectly, and the disadvantages (other than price) that I’ve listed are very minor ones. (NOTE — See update below and reason for reducing my original 4-stars to 3-stars).

Currently there are not many choices that I am aware of for a lightning car adaptor. The Apple store carried this product as well as a similar product from one other manufacturer, and there is also another Belkin car charger that does not have the cable and charger separate. I decided to get this model for the reasons stated above, and am happy with my choice.

Updated 8/1/13, 11/7/13: the cable insulation has begun to separate from wiring at the lightning plug end of the cable. We have not handled the cable roughly but it does get regular use, plugging in and out of our iPad. This is the first time I’ve had this type of problem with any cable or adaptor that I’ve used for any phone or iPad device. I’m tempted to reduce the rating further, to 3-stars, for this reason (and note that one other customer has also noted the same experience – see comments to this review).

This charger was amazing until I updated my IPhone to IOS 7. Apple programmed the new software to make it incompatible with after market chargers and now it doesn’t work.

Works, Great Cable, January 14, 2013

So i got this over getting just the amazon lighting cable. This cable work’s with most cases, the connector part is a bit larger then the standard apple one, but still fits fine in the otterbox defender series case. Charges my Ipad (4th gen) and iphone 5. Works well, Pretty Slim. The lightning cable tip seems to be the original iphone one. Exactly identical.

    Cons: abit pricey at $35.00

Pros: Comes with a lightning cable, that works with otterbox, Cable is good quality also
    Fast 2.1 Amp charger
