The Travel Umbrella is average, November 9, 2009

    The Travel Umbrella is average

I got 2 Coolibar UPF 50+ Umbrellas from the Coolibar site for travel in the Sahara desert. They are Skin Cancer Foundation recommended.

Made in China, so the quality, while not exactly evident at first sight, is average. This Travel Umbrella is the smaller one. It works with a button. After using it for about 1 month, everything was wearing down, from the open button, the Travel bag, the UPF silver lining, to the very flimsy interior spokes, etc.

Also, this Travel Umbrella is worthless in ANY wind. I used it in a little gust and it caved in badly and the cheap interior spokes got bent. I fixed it up but the lifetime seems to be about 1 year if you use it regularly. It’s overpriced, but necessary if you walk in the burning sun.

Also, Coolibar has lousy customer service, they didn’t answer my emails when I told them about all the “defects” (they sent a Travel bag that came unsewn, The Travel Umbrella open button broke in a week, etc.)

Try the Coolibar UPF 50+ Titanium Golf Umbrella or the Coolibar UPF 50+ Titanium Fashion Umbrella if you want a stronger sun umbrella (both still have cheap parts). They are more sturdy than this Travel Umbrella.

The umbrella looks pretty nice. Once it’s folded up, the strap fastened and in it’s included sleeve it’s very handy to keep in the car’s glove box and should fit in most purses pretty easily.

    The good:

    Looks great.
Compact, the included sleeve makes it pack up very nicely.

    The bad:

Very flimsy. I don’t believe this was made for rain… with rain usually comes some wind and all the hard parts are made of cheap plastic, INCLUDING the handle and rod going to the top. There are 8 total ribs, but they are extremely weak. Do NOT buy if you want to use it for good rain protection, because a tiny bit of wind and it will collapse or break. It’s not a big umbrella, so when the edges collapse in to where you see the second dome in the face of wind, your rain protection will be very small. The end of the ribs look like they’re made of an exceptionally weak fishing rod, because they bend easily and the rest of the ribs are plastic and thin, so even if they wouldn’t bend the whole thing would just break anyway, so the designers i’m sure figured it’d be better to not be functional in wind than to break entirely.

    Final thought:
The only thing this is good for is for protection from the sun on calm days or light rain with little wind. If you need it for that, it’s a great umbrella, but don’t bother for stormy weather. If Coolibar wants to make a great umbrella, they should really actually make certain parts out of Titanium so it lives up to it’s name in more than just color.

We ordered the Coolibar Golf size umbrella for use during exercise walks in the Florida heat; and also ordered the Coolibar travel size to keep in the car, for use when walking from the car to buildings, shopping, etc, and then collapse to carry while shopping. WOW, on the first day, other walkers commented, and stood under the umbrella, and said “I want one; it’s 10 degrees cooler under this.” So look for more orders. Other reviewers already commented on weight. I’ll gladly carry 1 and a half pound Coolibar umbrella to be 10 degrees cooler and to prevent skin-scorch.
