  1. Yes! I love this tag: "justdoingwhatevercomestomindfirstwithoutpausingtothinkabouthoworwhyorwhere " As you would say, "shine on!" (watch out for those crucifying, shiny effulgences though πŸ˜‰

  2. bacchanalian, if that is the correct spelling – but with a contemporary slant, of course! i am seeing myths come to life, and if kisses came out in the form of a cluster of grapes like that…………………life certainly would be more interestingly visual:)
i could also see carmen miranda at work here, but i’ll stick with the orgiastic rites, thankyou very much, hehe.

you never fail to surprise, monsieur!

  3. this is awesome. i couldn’t imagine anything more degrading than being crucified while being gagged with grapes and having coloured lamps on my head. that’s an interesting violent contrast indeed. the suggested blown kiss completes the symbolic message.

  4. wim: Thank you, thank you! …and of course, for the extra smile! πŸ™‚

bluechameleon: Glad you like! Thanks, as always!

Kym: Ah! It’s great to see you, my friend! It’s been a while! πŸ˜‰ Thank you, thank you!

Lou-magic: Grape-kisses and happenstance flicks of crucified lights! You should give it a try. The brain has a way of increasing the ‘storms’ of mythical proportions! Glad you’re ever-surprised! …and, always great to see you over here! Thanks. πŸ™‚

    LinBow: Ha! Thanks!!

Perdido: Hello there, and thank you for stopping in and for providing me with your commentary! Glad you found a personal-perception within! πŸ™‚

steffie: I think it is actually a 365, 24/7, type of insanity! πŸ˜‰ Thanks for stopping in! πŸ™‚

  5. Simon, SingAsong: Thank you both!!

Nancy: Ha! Thanks for stopping in, as always! …and yes, I am always doing well! Great to know that you’re happy! πŸ™‚

  6. Ha! This is funny at first sight, and then it becomes more and more compelling the longer I look at it.

Your mind is an endless well of ideas.

  7. holiday fun! blowing grape kisses!!

mmmm.. this one made me smile Derrick! Nice to see you expressing yourself without question! Thats the best!

  8. Oh Derrick! This is YOU!!
Your glowballs are showing, your glowballs are showing!

Ever so splendiferous in their multicolored hues, clickety-clackety as you turn your head and they collide with one another, tempting us with their gumdrop-innard filled centers!

And wait… is that? Why I think yes it is! Their texture is most certainly pineconian!! Furthermore, the grapes surely represent yet more sweetness (afterall, the spewing of sour grapes just isn’t your style).

Oh, Hahaaaa!! This image makes me smile BIG. What a lovely you. Joy, Joy, Joy!!!

  9. i find this very festive
just doing whatever comes to mind first with out pausing to think about how or why or where
    and
    having a blast, it seems : )

  10. oh! wow! what a surprise….it’s so colorful and full of life…
Derrick, thanks to you I’m smiling again πŸ™‚ the day isn’t lost!!! πŸ™‚

nice crown of lights, I guess it shiness beautiful in the night πŸ˜‰

  11. we mustn’t overlook those tiny baubles scarfing your neck, so thrilled to be in baublefest attendence with the big guys. my, you have really clean nails!

  12. I can’t help but be reminded of Arcimboldo as well…
    – but the richness of hues and all encompassing radiance is quite something to overcome here. I guess it’s not something to ever overcome…it’s Derrick, just unwrapped!

there are boundless inclinations that bear testiment to the shininess and magnitude of one said pinecone…..and what a bright light to be shared in a most appropriate approaching age of annum.

    shine on!!!!

  13. That is you? Hahaha.. you’re so normal, I don’t believe it, Derrick! How lovely, colorful and wonderful (I can only use simple words.. heh!) and 13th tag is correct. I see the evidence as I agree with the last tag!

So care to tell what effulgence mean? I don’t feel like searching for it. πŸ˜‰ and If your offering the (plastic?) grapes..I’ll take it. Certainly beats chewing cardboard πŸ˜‰

  14. this conveys happiness.. you’re crazy^^
I love the colours and angle.. like your "new" way of photography as well as the old one

  15. I just thought when i saw the thumb "Wow, there’s something colorful going on at Derrick’s!" lol
    the title really explains it.
i like how confusing the elements are together, but when we lokk at them separatedly they really have some… roder.

  16. What a lovely start to a morning! Derr-T, ‘shining on’ in inimitable style, crucified yes, but offering himself up for us.
Clearly preparations for the Genocide Ball are full steam ahead! πŸ˜‰

  17. Ahhhh hahaha! Some of these comments are quite hilarious and I’m glad this image could provide a "holiday spark" into you guys’ systems, because well, around here, it’s already Christmas it seems!

Free time? Ha! …if you only knew. When it comes to art/creativity, I make time.

Effulgence is a word I’ve always enjoyed. For some reason it reminds me of "fudge" (unsurprisingly).

    Holiday cards? Yes!

The Genocide Ball is most definitely running its course! "Just put your shoes on and let’s go out tonight…there’s a Genocide Ball to attend!" …sung in the most energetic 1940’s swing-dance voice.

Laughed out loud at the "you’re so normal" comment! πŸ˜‰

"Unwrapped"…? Yes, sometimes the padlocks come off every now and then. πŸ™‚

I have to admit I have a terrible habit of biting my nails, which has actually declined since I’ve gotten older. I keep everything clean. I love to be clean. I also love to smell nice. My favorite colognes: Azzaro Chrome (I receive compliments all of the time) and Curve.

Thanks tremendously to all of you for the entertainment!! I truly appreciate the comments!

  18. when i saw this is the thumbnail i started saying "oh my god. oh my god. OH MY GOD!"

my boyfriend got very nervous and came to check on me…

    yeah.
    like that.

  19. I’m reminded of the Echo and the Bunnymen song where Ian sings, "I’ve decided to wear my thorn of crowns, I’ve decided to wear my thorn of crowns, upside down, inside out, back to front, all the way around."

  20. hehe yeah a personal-perception it was. i didn’t get the humorous point of the picture, because i immediately got absorbed by this uncomfortable thought how it would _really_ be to be crucified and equipped like this. but actually it would make an interesting picture as well. =)

  21. Krissie: Haha! I would have been nervous, too! He may have thought that you had a spider on your leg or somewhere on your body and you were freaking out about it, or some type of weird insect that looks rather wicked. And it is usually the really wicked spiders that are not even poisonous (like various garden spiders and such). Although, there’s this one beetle that spits flames at its enemies/victims…I don’t think I’d want to come across that guy anytime soon!

Anyhow; hilarious comment! What did he say when he came into the room?

praxis9: Ha! It wasn’t like I was trying to hide the fact that these grapes are phony! πŸ˜‰ …Kidding you. And I haven’t heard/read the word "salubrious" in a long time! Thank you for that, as well as stopping in and commenting!

Ricardo: I love those guys! I’m going to have to look that song up now! Thanks!

Mr. Ed: I’m getting dizzy with all of these Baccus comments! Ha! πŸ˜‰ Thanks, as always! πŸ™‚

Perdido: Personal-perceptions are always enjoyable. I mean, you know, it would be rather boring if everyone had basically the same perception! *cough cough* Baccus *cough cough* …haha! (kidding!).

Let me tell you, my friend…

It wasn’t particularly "comfortable" to begin with, because, if anyone has noticed, those lights are actually plugged in! This image wasn’t as easy as it looks. In fact, it wasn’t easy, period!

I had about 2,000 bead-necklaces around my neck which kept my neck in one place (like a brace for when someone has broken their neck), not to mention I had the lights situated around my head to the point where I had to manually have the male connector shooting down the spine of my back so that I could use an extension cord to plug it into the female-portion, which I had to be careful not to move the wrong way because the beads around my neck would become superly-tightened (based on a particular movement — my pulse creating a small motion in the beads) and I didn’t want the lights around my head to come tumbling off, because then I would have to re-adjust them (which would have been fine, but if I can help save time by getting it correct the first time, then I will!), not to mention I also had these small decorative Cocktail umbrellas (you know, like these: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocktail_umbrella ) coming out of the sides of the grapes (which were unseen in this particular image, of course) which I was trying to keep in place (although they fell out a couple of times). On top of that, I had difficulty with the extension cord because I was often trip over when I moved to various locations throughout the house to find a great ‘natural lighting’ that was coming through the windows in various rooms, not to mention I also had a stethescope around my cheeks and had the grapes coming up through the small ‘gap’ that connects the two pieces together in the middle, in which I had to hold in my mouth quite tight. On top of all of that, having to control the camera without pulling too far away so that the extension cord wouldn’t come out of the plug-in socket, trying not to trip over the wires, trying to keep the grapes in place, allthewhile attempting to compose a shot.

Talk about suffering for the art! If only people knew what I go through to get certain images! Haha! Seriously. I remember looking in the mirror and asking myself, "Why am I doing this?"…ha! I actually found a logical/significant self-answer after thinking deeper about it, which goes beyond wanting to create something "artistic" or "bizarre" and what have you.

But anyhow, thanks for the comments! πŸ™‚

Marco Brown-Maltese Artist: Thanks for stopping in and for commenting! It’s always appreciated! πŸ™‚

  22. I love the tag: "crucified by the lip balm of light’s spooky chill"
i have a warm place in my heart for lip balm and anything spooky.
i think they should manufacture you into an ornament cause i want this image on the top of my tree this year. (if i had a tree)

  23. so much to love in this shot, but being a hairy man i think my favourite detail is your beard and eyebrows. they stand in such seemingly stark contrast to the rest of the image, and their darkness really does make the white background perfect. my initial reaction in thumbnail was to wish you had done it against a black background until that detail popped out. great choice.

  24. stellarr: Great to see you here! It’s been a while! πŸ™‚ …Thank you, as always, for stopping in, my friend!

Opal’d One: I’m glad there are people like you in this world. Those people who keep particular places in their hearts for lip-balm and spooky things. Now that gets you a few extra brownie-points! πŸ˜‰

I like the idea of me being manufactured into an ornament, as well! I wonder if the merch would sky-rocket? I wonder how many would sell? At least I know I have you that I can count on, my first buyer! πŸ™‚

Or, perhaps I could be your tree this year? I promise to be as "steady" as possible, but I can’t promise you that I will keep still for too long! I have quite an appetite, so as long as you keep a fridge nearby, then I will be very happy. πŸ™‚

    Carmilla-luna: Haaaha! ;)))

judekyle: First and foremost: Thank you for adding me, for your kind message and for taking the time to comment!

I have a liable reason for my hairiness here! I wasn’t kidding in the tags when I mentioned my razor being dull! Ha! I was actually thinking of experimenting with a half-beard/half-shaved photograph in the future, so I wanted to grow out it, so that is another part of my "liable reason." In fact, I just purchased some new razors today, so I feel a little better about the situation in case I want to go back to the smoothie!

I’m glad you find this interesting. I was actually a bit skeptical in posting it at first, but then my "what the hay" membrane struck a perfect incursion and my wishy-washyness dripped into the sink of "contemplation."

    Anyhow, thanks so much! πŸ™‚

  25. It reminds me of this old picture I have hanging on my floor of Haensel and Gretel with crowns made out of fruit. But not with unknown metal objects going into their mouths.

  26. aykgotl: Hanging on your floor? Now that is what I call being creative! πŸ˜‰ …There’s more to those "unknown objects" than what meets the eye! Thank you for the comments!

praxis9: I know, I know. I was just teasing! πŸ™‚ Glad you dig this!

  27. a long while later she replies…

    he said "what what what?"

    and i said "LOOK!!!"

and he shook his head and walked out…

he just dont get us D. he just cant.

oh… and if it had been a spider…
    he wouldnt have come…
somehow he is more afraid of them than i am…
but it makes me feel like a badass when i smash them for him…

i am the big man on campus then…

    for about 30 seconds.

    LOVE AND KITTENS!

  28. Dr. T. I could always used extra brownie points, and from you that makes them extra special. Speaking of Brownies, I’m awaiting my Brownie Hawkeye Flash camera in the mail from an ebay purchase. squee!
If you could see my collection of lip products you would be astounded. I swear they must get jealous of each other. Burts Bees is wondering why Home-made Ren Fair Balm took presidence by my bedside table, and Victoria’s Secret Sexy Gloss is sticking her nose up to Smackers since she spends her days in my cozy coat pocket.

I should think that after centuries of stars and angels, one might delight if having a DerrickT on top of their tree! It would be very David Blaine of you to attempt to "be" my tree for the duration of the month, though. Even with a fridge nearby, that would be quite a feat of endurance. But if you really care to try, I’ll set up an area in front of the window so you’ll at least be able to entertain yourself with sunrises and cars passing by. πŸ™‚

  29. Krissie: Haaaha! Poor fella. I suppose you should love it into him rather than force it? πŸ˜‰ …and, of course, I’m speaking of such unrestrained swirlings that he may or may not be aware of. Oh he could ‘get it’ if he tried hard enough. The dust storms only swirl for so long, you know? πŸ˜‰

I don’t ever smush the spiders. I just capture them in a jar or one a piece of cardboard or whatever I can find at the moment before they ‘rush off’ into some other darkly place in the house. Of course, they’re not "blood-suckers" so they are not out to harm people. Usually when you see them, they are going from one place to the next, minding their own business. Like the Sevendust song, "Black"…"I’m minding my own business!"…this is what I think of when I see them moving along.

Mel-o-maniac: Those extra brownie points are definitely at great heights for you, in their mesmerizing wonder! And just think; they all come in a variety of colors. More namely, amaranth, ponceau 3R, erythrosine, orange 1, naphthol, yellow S, light green SF yellowish, and indigo carmine.

The Brownie Hawkeye Flash camera is most-wonderful and I know you will enjoy its dynamism! Its absorptions will provide you with intermittent duties, questions from random people and more-than-likely a few stories of how their Grandparents and/or parents owned one, but a definite certification of enjoyment!

The lip-balm collection is something that I can relate to, actually! I have two sisters, so that explains it all right there. Amber has this one type of lip-balm that smells like strawberry Bubblicious and the aroma is oh-so sugary-delicious! ‘Smackers’ are quite popular with her as well. I’m not certain if she owns any Victoria Secret yumminess! I’ll have to ask her. πŸ™‚

I can imagine the coat pocket has quite an aroma, eh?

Ha! David Blaine would have nothing on me as a Christmas tree, I tell you. He would attempt to "out-do" me by creating his own example (like the Houdini brothers), but even then, the ordinary events wouldn’t be hassled enough. You can even put a vintage ‘frame’ around me that consists of 2,000 minute magnetic cores, but nothing will be able to stop my Christmas-treeness from existing in the highest transformation possible!

I like your idea of the area in front of the window so that I can be entertained by the sunrises/sunsets and the vehicles going by. I’ll even be willing to record their sounds, being you leave the window slightly cracked open (I’ll be warm enough, I suppose!). I’m liking this idea more and more. But, something has to be done about the fridge situation, you dig? Even a small cooler would work. Just as long as there is food nearby! πŸ™‚

Elsa: Haha! I…think…it may be…but…I am not really certain. Had I created this in May or June, then people may think it was just a ‘random creation’ rather than something created for Christmas spirit. Although, there is "Christmas in June", so I don’t know. πŸ˜‰

  30. haha, your description of the sufferings and efforts you took on you for this shot was hilarious derrick. especially that male connector shooting down the spine of your back, yikes! i’m trying to imagine that cyber-bacchus moving about in the house, searching for great ‘natural lighting’, with all those things attached, haahha. i mean, fun has it’s limits! that is hysterical! =)

it took a while until i got used to it, but slowly i’m catching the point of your existence. =)

  31. you amaze me derrick! the work that you put into your art is mind blowing!!!

you seem to be so full of stuff eg. feelings ,expressions. intrigue.excitement……..on and on and on……..

but as soon as you let it out there is another load queing upto get out, if you kept it all in you would burst!!

i should learn a lesson from you, this is so excuberant, fantastic! πŸ™‚

  32. Interesting use of words….of course, I notice this first….but your image is competing with that….in the most wonderous way…..I had to Google the word "effulgences"…because it’s not one I knew off hand and I ran across this….."the knowledge of God, which is attainable only through His Manifestation; steadfastness in the Cause of God through faith in His wisdom; the value of those arts and sciences which profit mankind, ‘not those which begin with words and end with words’; and recognition of Divinity in its Manifestation."

Your work, I recognize, is all these things….this image exemplifies it in a way I did not expect.

    A fave needless to say.

  33. Ha, Christmas lights are fun to play with. I used mine as jewelry in one of my 365 posts. I see a little Jesus and crown of thorns here.

  35. Thanks to all of you kind souls who commented here that I somehow neglected to respond individually to! Thorough appreciation!! πŸ™‚

Eden-lys: Thank you! I’ll add right away! πŸ™‚

  36. Glad I could make you chuckle-up rather than knuckle-up, Justine! πŸ˜‰

…and who said he is blowing out grape kisses, eh? Perhaps it’s the ‘thinking’ from the "love" that is answering the questions?

    Thanks, as always! πŸ™‚

  37. EEEEEEEEEKKKKK!!!!!!!! omigosh! this is fantastical! wow! DERRICK! your a freakin genious mang! your pictures brighten my days! thank you for sharing!!!

  38. What always turns me on about your work is the enthusiasm and love for the craft that is present in every installment. Even in your most "menacing" productions, that enthusiasm and love rings loudly.

You are such a treasure, my friend. As you always say, shine on!

  39. For some reason I want to bite your fingers. Maybe it’s on account of that crazy-techno fruit up there that I now realize isn’t fruit, but it still looks like fruit to me…raspberries and such. I love how free this image is – just wild and silly and smirky and FUN. Delicious DoF and the little light bits in the lower left look like they could be part of some funky-ass shirt you’re wearing. So YOU, Derrick. Love it!

  40. its like creativity, 70ish hallucination and modern flickr combined into one amazing photo trip… whatever that means. really cool…
