Inferior to Lego and the old Meccano system, November 1, 2011

I had an old Meccano set when I was a kid, so I had high hopes for the
modern Meccano/Erector sets. Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed.

The construction pieces (girders, plates) are fine.

The bolts have hexagonal holes that you must turn with an allen wrench
(supplied). This is rather fiddly, compared to the simple screw-driver in
    my old set.

The biggest problem is with the moving parts: axles, gears, wheels, etc.
My old Meccano set had round axles, and the gears and wheels had bushings
into which you inserted a screw to secure firmly to the axles. Very sturdy
    and never came loose.

The new set has rounded triangular axles, which is okay. But the gears and
wheels have no bushings. Instead, they are supposed to be held in place
with little rubber washers that you slide on the axles. I made the car
with my kids, and the rubber washers slide a bit with a few minutes of
play, enough that the gears and wheels no longer work properly. This is
very frustrating, for both me and my kids. The washers have to continually
    be slid back into place.

The main reason I preferred Meccano over Lego is that everything should be
held sturdily by nuts and bolts. But the Lego wheels and gears work better
than the new Meccano wheels and gears.

I purchased this for a gift for my sons little brother who is 8. This was his first Erector Set. These newer sets are a big step beyond the ones they had when I was a kid in the 70’s. This set includes an electric motor along with the usual gears and wheels. It builds many different models, but only one at a time. I don’t think there is a better toy to get a young boy or girl interested in the physical world of nuts, bolts, gears, wheels and motion than Erector Sets! The only complaint was that the instruction page detailed the building of one model, the rest were just an assembled photo….full plans are available on their site though so its really not a big deal. If you buy/gift this toy, you might want to include a tupperware container as there are lots of tiny parts to get misplaced ….probably ought to come with one but…

This building set is terrible! First of all, there is no way an 8-year-old can build this by himself. I had to build it for my son and got very frustrated with the unclear instructions. Half the time I felt like I needed an extra pair of hands to hold things together while putting in the itty-bitty screws (which sometimes had to be put in very hard to reach places). I normally love building sets, but this one left me upset. When I finally finished putting together the racecar, it was time to test it. It kept falling apart! Lost several screws/bolts and the back wheels. The gears didn’t seem to get a proper grip either, we had to keep re-adjusting them. Not fun to build and impossible to play with. We are very disappointed with this set, wish we would have stuck with Lego.
