Born of the Gods is the second out of three planned “Theros Block” sets. Theros (the green packaging) came out late last year and brought several new mechanics to Standard play and revived mechanics from past sets; among them: heroic, bestow, enchantment creatures, devotion and gods. This new set builds upon and complements the first Theros set with new gods and support spells.

Born of the Gods is considered a “small” set (165 cards) with 60 common, 60 uncommon, 35 rare and 10 mythic rare cards. All cards are printed as foils and may be included at random in regular booster packs.

This particular product contains 9 standard, 15-card booster packs. Each pack contains 1 rare (or mythic) card, 3 uncommons, and 8 commons. The remaining two cards consist of 1 marketing card and 1 basic land/token card. Thus, in a 9-booster pack fat pack, you will get 117 cards total (9 rare/mythic, 27 uncommons). Typically, you can expect to get between 1-2 mythic cards in a single fat pack. But, its possible of course to get none.

In addition to the booster packs, you’ll receive a pack of land cards with the Theros art. You’ll get two cardboard deck boxes (will not fit cards with sleeves on them), a full color book showing each card in the set (typically collectable), a cardbox with the Born artwork (my favorite piece), and a spin-down life counter.

Born of the Gods introduces several new mechanics which add interesting flavor to standard gameplay:
    – Inspired: abilities that are triggered when a creature untaps
    – Tribute: abilities that trigger when the creature enters the battlefield
    – Bestow: allows you to play a creature with this ability as an enchantment
    – Devotion: an ability that triggers when you have populated the field with sufficient spells of a certain color
    – Gods: indestructible creatures with abilities that trigger when you have acquired sufficient devotion

    Returning mechanics include:
    – Heroic: ability that triggers whenever you target a heroic creature with a spell
    – Scry: allows you to look at the top card of your library and move it to the bottom, if you prefer
    – Archetype: an enchantment creature that grants your creatures an ability and denies that ability to your opponent

Overall, the set is a nice complement to Theros but it hasn’t made a particularly big splash in Standard play, yet. The Ravnica block cards will remain in Standard play until late this year, and until then, it seems that BotG will not match their popularity. This fact is evidenced by the fairly lackluster monetary value of the majority of the cards in this set.

The standard retail price for each booster pack is $3.99. At the standard internet price of $35.00 this fat pack drops the cost of each booster pack modestly to $3.88. But, you get the added goodies along with them. The fat pack offers a nice alternative to buying an entire booster box typically appeals to most entry-level and advanced level players because of the extra goodies and attractive price point.

Everything worked out just fine, got what I wanted, fat packs are always cool. I didn’t pull anything super awesome, but that was just my bad luck :p
