I own (and am reviewing) several Nerf Super Soaker models because this line of guns (blue and white with orange accents) offers the best combination of durability, ease of operation, and affordability that I’ve come across. They are much more durable than the flimsy plastic used in most other squirt guns, and their water reservoirs have nice screw-on caps that don’t leak! If you shop around, you can also find great prices on the simplest models, which are some of the best in the line up.

About the Super Soaker LIGHTNING STORM MICROBURST (shotgun) model:

The Microburst is an awesome little squirt gun, and surprisingly, it is even one of my favorites in this entire line. It is perfect for close to medium engagements, and shoots a single stream of water out to 15 – 20 feet. A full reservoir gives you about 7 strong blasts (never fewer than 6, and often you can eke out an eighth shot that is thinner and weaker but still effective). Granted, that isn’t many shots in a squirt gun battle, but the small size and potent stream make this gun ideal as a back-up to a larger squirt gun, as well as a good choice for kids as young as 3. (My 2-year-old can operate it, but she has a little trouble aiming and pumping at the same time.) I like to keep mine tucked in my back waistband. When my main gun is empty and my opponents close in, I draw it from behind and aim for the face. It’s accurate and effective, and a great way to ambush someone who thinks they’ve got the upper hand on you when you appear to be out of ammo. Since there is no trigger or moving parts (except the pump handle) it is very durable, too. And it’s small enough to dunk in a bucket for fast reloads. After a day of using one of these, I went out and bought two more.

[UPDATE 8/7/2012: One issue has emerged with all three of our Microbursts. After several squirt gun fights over a several-week period, we put these away in the closet. When I got them out the other day, all three of them had suddenly developed a small gap in the seam that runs down the center of each gun (the gun is made in two pieces, sandwiched together and held tight with screws). In all three cases, the gap was most noticeable on the underside of the rail that the pump-action handle rides on. The problem is that when filling them, they leak. So you had to start firing right after filling them, and you usually could get 5 or 6 good shots versus the usual 6 or 7 before it was pumping airy mists. If you didn’t start firing right away, nearly the whole reservoir would drain empty. I’m disappointed, since these guns are so durable in every other respect. But unfortunately, I have to report that they may have a limited storage life before you’ll need to buy replacements. I tried tightening the screws, but that would not close the seams. I could try sealant (caulk perhaps) but it might interfere with the smooth operation of the pump handle. Anyway, just be aware of this problem–which to my surprise surfaced on all three of my Microbursts simultaneously.]

This gun is very cool like all nerf guns are. It shoots good, water shoots very far, and it does not leak at all! I really like it because of that reason and its fun and very small. There is only one problem and that is that it does not hold enough water. At maximum will shoot five full pumps, somtimes. Thats the only problem, so other than that, it is mostly a backup gun. Overall I whould really recommend this product. So if you want a good water gun you should get this.
