This is probably my wife’s favorite game of all time!!! And, I love crushing her in it, Mmmwaahahaha!!! So, I was stoked to see her face when she opens this on Christmes Eve.

I previously bought the Vintage/Library Editions (or what/however you call them) in the wooden box of Risk and Sorry from Target around Christmas time a few years ago when they first came out (for about $20, if memory serves). My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed those games, and they look wonderful sitting on our book shelf in their trimmed wooden “library” boxes. So, since (as mentioned before) my wife really loves Scrabble, I thought she would really treasure this edition (got STratego for my son also). I checked on Amazon and saw these versions for around $20 and jumped on them (also noticed what I thought was the same thing on Amazon for around $40). Upon arrival, I immediately noticed a few differences: (1) whereas my previous Vintage Editions are in a trimmed/shaped (rounded edges) “book” like wooden case, this edition is in a really squared-off “boxy” case (2) whereas the previous ones were completely lacquered and finished mahogany colored wood, this edition is relatively unfinished (or just cheaply done) on the back.

As these were purchased as Christmas gifts, I have not opened them to find out about the overall quality of the game board, pieces, etc., but I don’t hold out much hope for their quality either. I guess we shall see and respond accordingly by returning the items in the event that these details are also cheaply done.

Given that $20 is probably about what the normal cardboard box edition costs in stores, it is probably not really a bad price for this edition. But, as many others have mentioned in the reviews of the $40 edition, the details and trim of those more expensive editions make them really worthy of being passed down to subsequent generations as heirlooms. So, in hindsight, I personally would have opted for the $40 Vintage “Library” Editions that would look better displayed and are worthy of passing down to my kids and grandkids and so on.

Once again, this item is probably worth the $20, but just know what it is you are buying and that this is not a “great deal that you are getting on the $40 version.”

I was very disappointed with this game. It comes a a beautiful box but the game itself is poorly made.
    1. The board is folded and does not lay flat
    2. the tiles are made of a very light wood and move around on the board
    3. tile bag is flimsy and small.
I plan to send it back!

I found this product over-priced and under-engineered. Folding the playing board into four (yes that is 4) sections made it so vulnerable that the set I purchased broke the first time it was unfolded! Ridiculous. Disappointing.
