I have yet to look up this plant to get it’s name – I saw it repeatedly throughout Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and was able to shoot progressive stages of the development of the compound fruit on this really weird bloom.

This photo shows a section of a foot long (30cm) stem that is about 2 inches (5cm) thick.

The colours were really intense and beautiful, and of course the texture.

At this stage is still rather hard, almost like carved out of wood, and the nubs are starting to erupt.

The colours are a bright green with dark burgundy dots. Fantastical!

At this stage is hard like a tough cauliflower, almost like carved out of wood. The colours are an even green with a light blue-grey, waxy sheen.

At this stage it is getting a bit softer and feels really full of water..

The colours have deepened to dark wine and there are red nubs and some are still green.

What is going on!

This photo shows a section of a foot long (30cm) stem that is about 2 inches (5cm) thick and the dongles are about 1 inch long..

The colours were really intense and beautiful, and of course the really bizarre form.

At this stage it is really full of water and kind of bursting at the seams. The texture of the skin is kind of waxy, like rosehip.

The colours have burst into full on bright red colour and are as beautiful to look at as polished coral.

I wish I had seen between this photo and the one just before this stage, to really see these things grow.

What is going on!
