What is this? Of course it is a NWT bear plate BUT it is black on white, not blue on white like regular issue "EXPLORE" base plates. Also it has an MM prefix a prefix I have never seen on NWT plates. Any clues folks??? Plate came from Yellowknife and people there don’t know what kind of plate this is?? Help!!

  1. Hello, MM706 was the hull number for the HMCS YELLOWKNIFE, a coastal minesweeper. There exists a souvenir plate of the hull number -MM706(blue on white) that was given to the crew of 48. There also exists another blue on white plate -HMCS YK. I don’t know much about this plate other than it was for the YELLOWKNIFE. For a short period black on white personalized plates were produced by NWT. I believe you have an actual personalized plate with the HMCS Yellowknife hull number. The stickers also denote use versus souvenir. I have a black on white personalized plate in my collection -HOT 1. Your NWT pics are great. I will be writing an article for Plates magazine on the NWT special event plates(17 I know of). There is also one other ship plate -DDE261 for the HMCS Mackenzie -a destroyer escort sunk offshore in 1995 -named after the Mackenzie river. Dan Steele, New Mexico, ALPCA 9769
